Knol- A competitor to Google’s Wikipedia

The Internet is a large mass of information and can be easily available to a person by just clicking a button. However due to vast spread of information it is difficult to find the accurate data you are looking for. From the data it’s found that over 50% of the searches go through Google, so to make the access to the information easier they have designed an algorithm that will arrange the information in a specified order.

Now Knol, a competitor to Google’s Wikipedia has arrived with an attempt to create a stronger and user-friendly encyclopedia. Knol-”a unit of knowledge” is expected to advance in the fields in which Google lacked behind, but the basic premise is the same- that is to provide an online library.

The main difference between Wikipedia and Knol is that Wikipedia is ad-free and contributions are unpaid, while the author of a Knol entry will have the opportunity to support his article with ads and earn money from them. The main motive of Google behind this model is to encourage more and more people to contribute. Moreover as Wikipedia depends on multiple users to provide a collective information of a specific topic to maintain an entry, Knol encourages signed contributions from experts.

The criticism on Wikipedia about how easily the information can be modified affecting the accuracy of the information but this isn’t the case with the new model Knol. It would be premature to say that the days of collaborative, community driven, user-generated content are at an end, but there seems demand for the information provided by professionals. Now there wont be the case of faulty information as it was in Wikipedia. And now the experts also have an opportunity to earn money just by sharing the information they have.

Get your car converted to an Electric Car

As the pollution is increasing day by day along with the hike in fuel prices, it has become a problem to pay all the expenses of a car. A web Forum ‘The Finnish Forum using net community is providing service to convert standard Petrol car to an Electric Car. They are working in the tradition of “Open Source” projects laid down by Information Technology-like Linux computer operating system that challenged Microsoft’s dominance.

Electric cars have struggled to establish their place in the market with very less fans due to high prices or economy sized “golf carts” with a limited range. But as they are charged from power and don’t produce any harmful gases, so they are expected to be clean air alternatives to petrol-powered vehicles.

The Finnish group now offers a solution to the people who have been disappointed by the car industry. The group has found over 500 electric conversions in Finland and its website aims to begin the introduction of potential buyers to sellers of suitable used cars and to mechanics who can make the conversion with an electric motor and Lithium batteries.

The first conversion model will be Toyota Corolla, and its expected that about few dozen finished eCorollas this year which would have a range of  150 km per charge and a top speed of 120km/h, as compared to Oslo-based specialist car producer Think’s model City, which travels up to 180 km with a top of 100km/h. The car won’t be that costly after applying the kit to your running fuel car. The end-users  will have to pay for the car, the components and also to the mechanic as decided by the Forum.

This is a good opportunity is your car is proving costly to you due to high fuel prices and you can also contribute towards a eco-friendly technology.

BioEthanol- The problem to Fuel crisis

The First generation bioethanol fuels are neither cost effective neither did they contributed much to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. They also require huge amounts of food crops such as corn or sugarcane, this means that they can’t be produced in big quantities without threatening food supplies. But Second-generation bio-fuels can be the real alternatives for future and  supply larger proportion of our fuel. Moreover as they don’t consume food biomass so they step aside from the ‘Food or Fuel’ debate, but the problem related to it is the extraction of Ethanol from such stuff.

But now the solution to this thing seems to have appeared to as a chemical company in England developed a method to produce ethanol in large quantities from municipal solid waste and other organic things. The waste is superheated and is then fed to bacteria that produces ethanol which is then purified to be used as fuel by cars. One ton of dried waste produces nearly 400 liters of bioethanol, and it emits 90% less greenhouse gases.

This type of production serves dual process, firstly it solves the problem of waste disposal and secondly a fuel which is very efficient. The first commercial plant is expected to be set up in 2 years. Car companies are looking forward to make engines that can run directly of this kind of fuel without and conversion processes. This will play a major part in the alternatives for fuel and also as a eco-friendly solution.

Panipat Hi Pass

Another example of technology being used everywhere in today’s world is the Fly Over built on India’s national highway no.1 which is nearly 9.3 km long from one end to another. Actually it consists of 3 flyovers in all. The center one is the longest and it almost covers the city of Panipat. The other two are comparatively smaller and are on the outer part of the city where traffic and population is expected to boom in future.
It looks like a wave model that almost each and everyone would have studied in physics, as the central flyover represents the main wave and the other two represents its sidebands. It is simply a treat to have a ride on that excellently constructed engineering structure.
The national highway is the lifeline of India and links major cities of India and even Pakistan. But people faced lots of problems when it comes to crossing Panipat as there isn’t any bypass here. People have to wait hours in traffic jams and many of them missed their flights and others missed their meetings.
Many who had to reach places on time leave hours before what they should have done in normal conditions. Local people also suffer a lot due to heavy traffic jams and sometimes children coming from school reached their homes almost 3 hours late.
Finally the solution was put forward and a flyover is being build by L&T which has proved really very beneficial to each and every person. Now people can go through Panipat within 8 min which sometimes took hours.
It’s a 6 lane, beautifully designed and constructed flyover. The space is being perfectly utilized. People have to pay Rs.20 per crossing. And according to me its very less as far as the time which is being saved by giving few bugs.
If you have been through Panipat before then you may have thought of not coming again but now its completely changed. visit the Panipat Hi pass to have a great feeling of traveling.

4G Wireless Technology Begins to Take Shape

The mobile phone has evolved from a basic device that just makes calls to a multi functional gadget like the i phone, which can also retrieve e-mail, store and play music, surf the Web, and even stream video files.

This reflects the advance in mobile technology from the 1980’s first-generation (1G) circuit-switched analog systems to today’s 3G and even 3.5G digital technologies.

As always, service providers and users are looking for wireless technologies that offer better performance and more advanced capabilities than their predecessors and that thereby better approximate the experience of using wireline technologies.

With this in mind, the International Telecommunication Union is working on a 4G cellular standard, which the ITU plans to release in a couple of years. The technology would enable IP-based voice, data and streaming multimedia at higher speeds-theoretically up to 288 mega-bits per second for mobile users than current cellular approaches.

The approach could go beyond the cell phone and provide mobile data services to consumer-electronics and other devices that currently don’t have Web access or don’t work wireless. These services could include the sending of photos from cameras to printers and improved videoconferencing from laptops.

Several service providers are already experimenting with or soon plan to experiment with potential 4G technologies.

However, 4G implementation could take several years, because carriers want to recover their considerable investments in 3G technology.

Meanwhile, 4G will have to overcome technical and marketplace challenges to become successful.

You can talk to a person anywhere in the world while sitting at your home only.

My next post will tell you about the latest technology in the communication field.

So remain connected.
